 David Martin - Chair of BCME Committee   


After research in Mathematics and Theoretical Chemistry, David taught Computer Science and Mathematics (1:1) in FE. He was a teacher trainer and external examiner for specialist teaching qualifications in mathematics for the Life Long Learning Sector. He has been Chair of the National Association for Numeracy and Mathematics in Colleges, and Honorary Secretary and Executive Secretary of the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK.

David is a Mathematics Education Consultant and is National Subject Advisor for Mathematics and Statistics for the U3A. He was a member of the planning committees for both BCME6 and BCME8.


Peter Ransom - Secretary of BCME Committee

Peter is a Past President and the current Chair of Council of The Mathematical Association. He taught in state secondary schools for over three decades and is now a freelance consultant. He recently co-authored a Core Maths text book and teacher guide. He writes questions and crossnumbers for the UKMT.

He is a member of the MA, ATM, BSHM, IMA and LMS where he is currently on the Education Committee. Peter also does Saturday masterclasses and is known to travel sometimes with a sword and cannonball.

Sue Pope - Chair of Programme Committee

Sue is Associate Head of Department for Professional Development and Educational Innovation (PDEI) at Manchester Metropolitan University. For five years, she was the national lead for mathematics 5-19 at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) where she managed and quality assured substantial research, development and evaluation projects.

She moved to QCA after ten years in higher education working with beginning primary and secondary teachers on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and supporting experienced teachers working towards higher degrees through researching their own practice. She worked as a local authority adviser after teaching for ten years in a number of schools, including five years as head of mathematics in an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school where she worked closely with feeder primary schools initiating strategies for enabling primary-secondary transition and cross-phase approaches to assessment. 

 Sue is a long-standing active member of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and is currently treasurer.


Karen Gladwin - Chair of Venue Committee

Karen first joined the ATM and MA in 1990s while still a trainee, and has been a regular at the Easter conferences ever since. She believes in the fantastic CPD opportunities offered by any conference bringing together such large numbers of like-minded people.

She was the CPD convener and conference leader for ATM in the past, leading the ATM conference team in 2006, and she was a member of the Committee that organised BCME 6 in 2005.

Karen has taught in both middle and secondary schools, spent time as a National Strategy Consultant in Suffolk before moving into teacher education at Anglia Ruskin University.

She is currently the Mathematics Lead at Sussex University for both ITE and SKE courses. As a university tutor involved with ITE, she believes that it is her responsibility to keep the next generation of teachers advised of the opportunities offered by the various professional associations.


Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai - Chair of Communications Committee & The British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM) Representative

Vincent is a Lecturer in Primary Mathematics Education at the University of Reading’s Institute of Education. In addition to his Chairmanship of the BCME’s Communications committee, he also currently serves as the Conference Organiser of the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM), the incoming Conference Officer and a Trustee of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM), the Co-Editor of The Mathematical Association's (MA) Primary Mathematics journal and a member of the joint ATM / MA Primary Working Group.

 Vincent completed his PhD on primary teachers' beliefs about mathematics, its teaching and learning at the University of Cambridge; his first Master's degree in International and Comparative Education at the University of Oxford; and his second Master's degree in International Public Policy at University College London (UCL), the University of London.


Jim Thorpe - Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) Representative


Jim has been involved in mathematics education for a long time, teaching in secondary classrooms and in Further Education then supporting in a variety of ways the work of mathematics teachers. His current occupation is mainly tutoring in mathematics and education for the Open University. Currently a trustee of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and its conference officer, he is committed to promoting effectiveness in mathematics classrooms.



Bill Richardson - The Mathematical Association (MA) Representative

Bill has been on the MA Council for many years and was President in 1996-1997. Though retired, he is still active in school level mathematics as well as helping to produce The Mathematical Gazette. He lives near Elgin, with his dog, Luran, an Italian Spinone.




Kerry Hamilton - Association of Teachers of Mathematics Senior Administrative Officer

Kerry takes overall responsibility for the work of the ATM office staff and ensures by negotiation and direction that all duties and liabilities of the Association are met. She oversees the organisation of the annual ATM conference, provides secretarial & administrative support for ATM General Council and manages the Associations website and customer database.




Marcia Murray - The Mathematical Association Senior Administrator

Marcia, employed by The Mathematical Association as its Senior Administrator, is responsible for the operational systems required for the Association to function, the maintenance of the building and grounds, handling the governance arrangements for Council and overseeing the staff at MA Headquarters in Leicester.




Paul Glaister - JMC Chair


Paul is Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Reading. As well as 36 years’ teaching and leadership experience, his 400+ publications span research in numerical analysis, mathematics/science education, and teaching and learning. He is a regular speaker at national conferences and workshops.

He is a Fellow of the IMA, a member of the LMS, a Chartered Mathematician, a Chartered Scientist, a Qualified Teacher (QTS), and a Fellow of the HEA.  Paul is currently briefing universities on Core Maths, and post-16 mathematics more generally, following an invitation to them from BIS to find out more about Core Maths.

 He is also the Chair of the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK (JMC) and so is an Ex-Officio member of the BCME Committee.
